Come support the VAH staff at Miles of Mooresville!

June 18th at the Miles of Mooresville races downtown (first race starts at 7pm), you may notice a fair number of familiar faces and a few Village Animal Hospital t-shirts... please cheer extra loud for us and our families as we run (... jog... walk...) through the streets of DoMo!  And don't be shy about enjoying a tasty adult beverage while at the race... all money generated by Carolina Blonde from beer sales benefit the Humane Society of Iredell "no kill" shelter!

H3N8:  The Canine Influenza Virus

Recently, a representative from Schering-Plough Animal Health visited Village Animal Hospital to educate the staff about the Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) and the vaccine that is now available for the prevention of it.  Canine Influenza was first reported in Florida in 2003 and cases have now been confirmed in 30 states, including North Carolina.  This virus is easily transmitted by direct contact, cough or sneeze, or via contaminated surfaces.  Common clinical signs include fever, cough, and nasal discharge.  CIV progresses to pneumonia in up to 20% of cases and is fatal in up to 8% of cases.  Fortunately, Schering-Plough Animal Health has developed a vaccine for this virus.  Initially, dogs that are 6 weeks or older will need two doses given 2 to 4 weeks apart, and then vaccination continues yearly.  Doctor Moretz is recommending that all dogs that are boarded, groomed, attend doggie daycare, go to a dog park, or are involved with a rescue group are vaccinated for Canine Influenza.  Please contact Village Animal Hospital for more information or to set up an appointment for your pet to be vaccinated.
